Florence is
a small city of approximately 450 thousand people therefore
the historical centre is relatively small and almost all of
the major attractions are within walking distance of each
other i.e. the Duomo and Giotto's main bell tower which are
located in the main square, the Ponte Vecchio and the Uffizi
Art Gallery which are to be found next to the River Arno.
The main railway station in Florence is Santa Maria Novella
which is located in downtown Florence only a 10 minute walk
from the city's main square which contains the aforementioned
Duomo and Bell Tower. Michelangelo's David - the original
- is to be found in the Galleria dell'Accademia which is a
15 minute walk from the main square. The Fortezza da Basso
which hosts all major trade fairs and exhibitions in Florence
is located 10 minutes walk to the south of Florence Santa
Maria Novella train station.
