Although Venice attracts tourists all year round, it is much less crowded in this period of the year than any other. January may be the driest month of the year, but it is still the coldest so warm clothes are essential. Until the beginning of February there will be almost no cruise ships visiting the lagoon but in the second half of the month things will begin to pick up with school holidays across Europe and the arrival of the Venetian Carnival which will take place practically throughout the entire month with the most part of the crowds arriving towards the end of the month.
The month of March is said by some to be the best month of the year to visit. The crowds have dropped but the temperature is rising, particularly towards the end of the month proving to be the perfect time for a quiet visit before the Easter rush.
